Health Care Professionals
Welcome to the Society for Oncology Massage! We're so glad you're here.
Massage is an integrative healthcare practice that is increasingly being used during and after cancer treatment. Oncology massage is about specific, knowledgeable, caring service. It is not a series of techniques or applied protocols. Rather, it is a body of knowledge about cancer and how cancer treatment can and does affect the body. A massage therapist who has oncology massage training has the ability to use information gathered from a person's unique medical history to adapt any number of existing massage therapy techniques to provide a safe, effective, and satisfying massage session.
Clinical research supports the use of massage in reducing pain and anxiety. People affected by cancer also report benefits like improved sleep, decreased feelings of isolation, enhanced body image, and increased feelings of well-being. Oncology massage education for massage therapists is essential for clinical safety and therapeutic benefit.
Many cancer treatments require immediate as well as long-term massage modifications in particular where lymph nodes have been removed or compromised. Adaptations to massage therapy techniques may be indicated not only during treatment but also potentially for the rest of a person's life after treatment.
Health care professionals like you are essential to sharing our message of the value of safely adapted massage therapy for people affected by cancer: “Massage therapy is safe for people affected by cancer when provided by a massage therapist with oncology massage training."
